CUA Celebrates the Life and
Service of Reverend Dr. Hopie
Strickland, Jr.
Born May 18, 1941 in East Point, Georgia to the late Reverend and
Mrs. Hopie Strickland, Sr., Dr. Hopie Strickland, Jr. exemplified
outstanding leadership in his community. Alifelong learner, Dr.
Hopie Strickland, Jr. graduated from the New Orleans Baptist
Theological Seminary in New Orleans, LA, with an Associates of
Divinity degree. Determined to further his studies, he received his
Bachelors, Masters and Doctor of Theology degrees from the Slidell
Baptist Seminary in Slidell, LA.
Dr. Strickland became shepherd to his first congregation in 1970 and went
on to enjoy a wonderful career in ministry which spanned 39 years and
involved churches throughout the southeast, revival crusades in Jamaica, and
participation as a member of the Holy Land study. Before his death, Dr. Strickland
was Senior Pastor of Victory Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Stockbridge, GA. He stressed the
importance of a well-balanced relationship with God through prayer, worship, Bible study and fellowship. In
2005, he was led to a new teaching ministry called the Tabernacle Bible Institute, where students enroll in a threeyear
certificate program.
Dr. Strickland, Jr. worked for more than thirty years at the City of Atlanta Bureau of Water and believed in giving
his time to many worthy causes. He had also just begun serving his second three-year term as Chairman of the
Board of Directors for CUA, and was chairman of various committees throughout his many years on the
Board. Dr. Strickland, Jr. was also a member of several not-for-profit and faith-based organizations.
When indulging in some of his favorite past-times, such as coaching little league, singing in the choir, or
spearheading a campaign, Dr. Strickland always led by example and demanded the best from everyone.
We, the Board members and employees of Credit Union of Atlanta will truly miss our leader, who
was a supporter and friend to many and a genuinely faithful servant. We also wish to extend our deepest
sympathy and prayers to his wife, Mrs. Linda Strickland, and family.
He fought a good fight. He finished his course. He kept his faith." Servant of God, well done!
