The Board of Directors Memorial Scholarship
(In memory of Juliette Akins, Gary Holmes and Hopie Strickland)

INFORMATION & GUIDELINES

The Board Memorial Scholarship was established to recognize the dedicated service of past CUA board members. Scholarships are awarded based on the evaluation of a written essay. Applicants' identities are withheld from the judges until the finalists are selected.

The Award for each category is as follows. There will only be one (1) winner per category .

A. 2nd—5th grade (Ages 7 - 11): $50 credited to student's savings account at CUA.
B. 6th—8th grade (Ages 11 - 14): $100 credited to student's savings account at CUA.
C. 9th—10th grade (Ages 14 - 16): $250 credited to student's savings account a CUA.

D.
11th—12th grade (Ages 16 - 18): $500 credited to student's savings account at CUA.
E. College Students (Ages 18 - 24) $1,500 scholarship
payable to a college or institution of higher learning.

SELECTION

Scholarships are awarded based on the evaluation of a written essay. Applicants’ identities are withheld from the judges until the finalists are selected.

ELIGIBILITY

Category A (2nd – 5th Grade)
Applicants must submit a 100 word essay entitled “What does it mean to be "financially secure" and why is that important” (Do not include your name or sign the essay )

  • Provide one (1) written recommendation from a School Administrator, Teacher or Counselor at the school you currently attend.

Category B (6th – 8th Grade)
Applicants must submit a 200 word essay entitled “What should be the guidelines for a child to start earning an allowance?” (Do not include your name or sign the essay )

  • Submit proof of academic performance that indicates a cumulative average of C+ or better for the current semester.
  • Provide one (1) written recommendation from a School Administrator, Teacher or Counselor at the school you currently attend .

Category C (9th – 10th Grade)
Applicants must submit a 350 word essay entitled “Understanding Financial Literacy is important, Why?” (Do not include your name or sign the essay )

  • Submit proof of academic performance that indicates a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the current semester.
  • Provide one (1) written recommendation from a School Administrator, Teacher or Counselor at the school you currently attend.

Category D (11th – 12th Grade)
Applicants must submit a 500 word essay entitled “What is a career you think you may be interested in pursuing? What are the costs and benefits of this choice? How would you prepare financially and educationally now, in order to achieve your areer goal(s) later?" (Do not include your name or sign the essay )

  • Submit proof of academic performance that indicates a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the current semester.
  • Provide one (1) written recommendation from a School Administrator, Teacher or Counselor at the school you currently attend.

Category E College Students (undergraduates)
Applicants must submit a 1000 -word essay entitled “With the global economic climate changing every day, do you think that the dollar can hold strong if the Euro fails?” (Do not include your name or sign the essay)

  • Submit proof of academic performance that indicates a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the current semester.
  • Provide one (1) written recommendation from an Administrator, Professor or Counselor at the college or institution you currently attend.

Extra Credit
Why are setting money goals for your future important? List your top 5 money goals for 2011.

Deadline
Please mail (postmarked by April 2nd) or hand deliver (no later than 4:00 p.m. on April 2nd) your completed Application and Essay to:
